'Journal club. A term widely applied to any gathering where
one person tells a few others about an article. I think it
must be an American idea that this is somehow a club.'

What the hell is a Tim Tam?

Lara Cain is writing a thesis on how Australian novels represent our cultural identity, and the way people from other cultures make sense of these texts. If you want to read more, and find out how Nick Earls fares, then head on over to M/C - a journal of media and culture where you can delve into the article: 'What the Hell Is a Tim Tam?' Reducing the Space between Cultures through Electronic Publishing.

Lara has also published an article called 'More to offer than Baywatch' - International press commentary on the release of Australian novels. The article appeared in Volume 1, Issue 1 of Inter-Cultural Studies: A Forum on Social Change & Cultural Diversity. The article includes a discussion of Zigzag Street by Nick Earls and is available to read online (in the February 2001 issue).

Nick Earls lends a hand

Sunny Garden patrons may remember that Nick Earls was one of 30 celebrities to lend a hand to Mater Hospitals' Star of Lights 1999 Christmas Appeal. As part of the Star Hands internet auction, a framed, mounted and signed Nick Earls' hand mould was up for grabs.

The successful bidder reported to Sunny Garden that, after posing for photographs, the hand mould is now in pride of place on the living-room wall where it attracts many comments.

A unique piece of art made even more unique by its plaque, which reads:

Nick Earls
Author of Zig Zag Street,
Bachelor Street &
Head Games.
